leaking hydraulics from bottom of transmission

My 8N leaks fluid through a small hole under the transmission, but only when the 8N is facing downhill.

What would be the cause?

foes it have a cotter key in it? or should it? :)

it's likely the bellhousing drain.

if it is hyd /trans oil leaking and not crankcase oil.. you likely need a new trany input shaft seal.

it's a split to put it in.. so when repalcing that 5$ seal.. check the clutch out too.

That makes sense. I have a couple of things that the tractor needs, not to say the least an overhaul on the hydraulic pump. And do not have the facility to work it. Anyone know a mechanic in the Osceola, Iowa area?

Mike........there should be 2-cotterkeyed holes in yer tranny housing. The cotterkeys jingle-jangle to keep the dust from sealing the drain holes. What it means, DON'T OVERFILL yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil ...or... the front tranny seal will LEAK.

We recommend pulling the 6-o'clock bolt from yer 6"-roundy dipstick plate behind yer right heel and letter dribble down the side of the tranny. That sets the level atta'bout 4-1/2 gals (which is plenty) and stops the front tranny seal from leaking (which can eventually oil yer clutch plate) ...and... more IMPORTANTLY, stops the rear axle seals from leaking on yer brake shoes. .......oily Dell

OK, I just looked at the exploded views and no mine does not have a cotter pin in it.

I did fill the housing with 5 gals. The bolt suggestion is great . Thanks.

By the way, any trick to getting the rear tire off?
I have the 6 bolt rim. Just got a nasty flat today by way of fencing wire through the side wall. But I'll be dipped if I can get that rim busted off.

Leave the rim on.
Let the tractor hold it for you while you change the tire/tube.
If you really want it off, you can take it off at the outside 6 bolts
or the inner 8 lug nuts.
Either one works, but the inner 8 makes it easier to put back on to me.

Mike........eazyway to bust yer reartire off, is to remove ALL the 8-axle nuts and then LOOSELY re-nut 2-nuts and then drive in figger-8's. Roundy-round. This will bust yer 8-studs loose. CAUTION: those rear ag-bar tires can weigh up-to 300#. So iff'n it starts to tip-over; guess what??? Gitt outta the way!!! Many ar-bar tires are filled with CaCl (calcium chloride) salt water for added traction weight. .......Dell

What is it doing? How do you know it needs hyd. pump worked on? Depending on what it is doing might just need ram cylinder reworked. Just curious..Thanks

It will not hold the 3 point for more than a minute or two. I have not looked at the pump through the window yet, but it started to lose its hold shortly after I tried lifting an out building that was heavier than the tractor.
I'm guessing now that I blew a gasket and its leaking.

Very likely u will see the proplem with oil streaming from the top area and that will be good news--very likely not the pump itself.

at this point you need to stop, and get a service manual.

while it MIGHT need work on the pump ( relief, etc.. ).. many, many 'won't hold' problems are from a leaky piston/oring/ring issue ( however there are others. like lekay gaskets and pinholded pressure tubes..e tc.

pays to do some observation and troubleshooting before jumping to the comclusin you need to pull a part off that may not be contributing to the problem at all.

I just returned from a short visit to your area.

CHEROKEE COUNTY. Had to run out there to check on things where I have an investment in the POCOHONTAS area.
