Here is a pic of the way the existing fuel sender unit is connected up there is no insulation between the two wires where they connect to the sender unit. Does this look right to you? On the mercury website for parts the unit they sell has a separate tab to connect a ground to.

Yes. Think of your distributor, where the coil AND the condenser connect together at the points. Only here, the condenser is connected to sender and wire going back to gauge.

Britcheflee,Like I said ,try running a wire from one of the sender screws to a good ground on the frame. The only ground the tank has is the mounting straps.dirt-rust ect.= no grounded tank or sender.

Britcheflee, it's been a long time but I had a 40 coupe that I rebuilt and rewired not using a store bought harness. I think there is only 1 wire running to the top of the sender, it grounds to the tank and frame. here is a link to wiring diagrams http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/FH_images/FH_electrical-pics/Flathead_Electrical_wirediagram1940car.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_drawings_electrical.htm&h=647&w=800&sz=138&tbnid=btaNILELrpj9ZM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=111&prev=/search%3Fq%3D1940%2Bford%2Bwiring%2Bdiagram%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=1940+ford+wiring+diagram&usg=__sIgfVQ0B7jSwGlVEnFx-CYoH_1I=&sa=X&ei=IqaJUbTtM4SQ9QSjx4CoDQ&ved=0CCIQ9QEwAA

or google 48 ford wiring

The insulator on the condenser is is pushed back and the insulator on the sender wire is rotted.I use heat shrink tubing but vinyl tape will work will do.The condenser is there to stop radio noise. After all those years I would replace the condenser. The rust says the tank may have lost its ground. An ignition condenser will do.

Excuse my ignorance but do you mean a regular condenser like I use in the points on my 8n? I need voltage specific 6 or 12 volts? The car is 6 volts.

Tks

ondenser voltage in this instance is a "don't care". Yes, as on points will be fine. Do go ahead & put that ground wire on one of the 6 mounting screws over to good chassis ground (the wire everybody has been telling you about). Condenser........other than possible radio static when gas sloshed around, you can cut the condenser & never know it was there or absent.

I have the original AM Radio in it - hardly worth putting on as it is tough to get any stations and the sound is poor so will remove the condenser. Will re-locate the grounding wire. Tks

hat do you mean by "relocate the grounding wire"? So far as I can tell there is no grounding wire to "re-locate". Do you mean, that you will install a grounding wire? Just trying to be clear.
