Hello all,

Purchased a 8n a week ago and have been using it nearly everyday. Great tractor. Also bought a middle buster from TSC to break up ground for a half acre food garden and a 1.5 AC flower/walk through garden. Ive already plowed the food plot but I had the stay bars attached while doing so. Is this the right method or should they be removed? They didnt cause any noticeable problems but i also dont want to affect anything negatively.

P.S Have the owners manual. Probably missed something.
Thanks

Yep sway bars are just fine. They keep the plow from pulling to one side or the other as you plow. You find you also need a disk to break up the clods the plow makes so you have a nice level area to plant

Whew good to know thanks for the quick response. On the hunt for a disk but not looking to pay $850 at TSC and havent found any close enough yet.

19f0rd8n52........see them BALLS at the end of the 3-point arms??? Wanna guess what will happen to yer plowing without the staybars??? After you turn yer soil, DRAG a heavy railroad tie to break up the clods. ........Dell

Yep a disk can be hard to find. Many people own a disk but not a plow since they put in food plots for the animals you can get by with just a disk. By the way if your thinking about a Tiller forget it the 8N goes to fast in first gear to use a tiller Just putting that out before you start asking LOL

Congratulations on your discovery of a fine pastime that has the added benefit of getting a lot of work done :)

Old- Nope, already have a tiller for the lawn mower. Been taking care of the garden for the last 10 years. But after all that time needed to dig down deeper and get some fresh soil. Looks like ill be on the lookout for a railroad tie. Gonna try a blade for now.

A drag harrow would work better then a tie would. As for the soil I do an organic garden and have for decades and I use a lot of manure in my garden and had pepper plants 6 foot tall last year and many other years

How wide of a disk can the 8n reasonably pull? Looking at one around 6' seems like it would be able to pull it fine. Im very fortunate the garden area was a cow pasture for 60 years and produces excellent crops.

6 foot 3 point one is about right as long as it is not to heavy. I have a 6 footer I used behind an 8N but had to remove a weight I had on it due to the fat the front wheels would not stay on the ground

That reminds me of the time I was going to "borrow" my neighbors disc harrow that he used behind his Ford 3000. Dang, I could pick it up just fine...but like you said, I would have to steer with the rear brakes and the front end in the air. Made me nervous and I set it back down and said forget it.

I gave up plowing and harrowing.A big tractor tiller digs down 12 inches then you can plant right away.Costs 50 bucks. You plow up the soil nice, then pack it down while harrowing.
