Front shimmy

How much movement is acceptable in front axle center
pin? I can see mine move noticeably when an
assistant moves steering wheel back and forth. Also,
my books talk about alignment marks to get you
zeroed in on toe in, does anyone have a good picture
of these marks on a real tractor? My books"
illustrations are hard to read, and appear to point
at different places from one book to the other. 8N
kind of gets squirrely in 4th gear down the road.
Thanks everyone. Phipps

My "48 8N does that in 4th gear. My steering box is so worn out that I got almost a quarter turn of play in it at the steering wheel.
To dampen wobble at speed I put my foot against the back end of the right side drag link. Not a fix but will bring the world back into focus.
The actual steering components in my front end seem tight. Only the steering box is loose.

My 49 8N did the shimmy in 4th gear until I replace the worn out bears in steering box. If you have a lot of play in the steering that's most likely your problem.

This shows the match marks on my 8n.

Toe in can be measured on the tires.A tractor needs more toe in.A horse draw buggy needs toe in and camber to track straight.

Same with my 8N, luckily it tracks nice and straight going down the lane, just sloppy steering but not quite a quarter of a turn more like an eighth. My 9N on the other hand steers like a dream, still nice an tight.
