Bendix replacement

So I posted a while ago about my bendix that broke, I bought a replacement and am planning on installing it today. Before I install it, I just want to confirm that I'm doing it right since the starter shaft only has one hold and it looks like the old bendix wasn't fully engaging the flywheel. Should I need to drill a new hole in the starter shaft for my replacement?

Thanks,

I have installed two of the new style on my two tractors and did not drill any new holes and they are both working just fine after 3 - 5 years.

Unless the DE bushing is an extra-wide not OEM width bushing, it has worked quite a ways out of the endbell.

Is that something that I can just gently tap back in, or should I take the starter apart and reposition it?

(quoted from post at 08:56:37 05/05/13) Unless the DE bushing is an extra-wide not OEM width bushing, it has worked quite a ways out of the endbell.

Bob that is the way they come the gear is longer than oem. but will be positioned on the starter correctly. I just did some measuring today with my starter and both old and new drives.I have pictured both side by side fully extended as you can see both gears are positioned the same just the spring housing is shorter on the new hope this helps

A second look at the picture looks like the bronze bushing is working out I would check that out.

Bob sorry after rereading your reply I realized you were talking about the bushing not the longer gear.
