After market 2N starter

I just acquired a well used 2N. It was sold to me because the owner was having trouble with the starter-one he bought from Carquest. They told him that the N Ford starters had two different shaft lengths????? Never hear that before--have you? Removed the starter and the the gear will not spiral back far enough to engage the ring gear. Goes just far enough to touch the gear teeth. My opinion-- this starter is no a Ford N replacement. Your opinions please.

Bert........Carquest is semi-correct. You can NOT gitt an identical starter Bendix that you "pin" at the end of the LONG starter shaft. Replacement Bendix's need a NEW pin hole drilled about 1/2" closer to the starter body. ...therefore... 2-different lengths. Simple, eh?

Me? I would NOT futtza'round with drilling a new pin hole, I would use the MODERN "clutch" style Bendix in the ORIGINAL pin hole. I would also grind a "wedge/point" on end of roll pin so it starts in the starter pin eazier. .........Dell

Dell: Thank you.I now, seem to recall a thread about this years ago.You are 100% correct about the hole placement. Measurements confirm that the bendix needs to be 1/2 inch closer to the starter body. About the bendix, it looks like the "new" style and presently is locked and will not retract toward the end of the shaft. Will do some comparisons tomorrow.
