Accelerator pump question OT

I am going to replace the accelerator pump on my 1953 Mercury - has to the two barrel carb - have had problems with the pump before but this year it needs to be replaced - this is the one with the leather top - I have the new part but my question is - do I need to soak that leather in anything before installing or install just as is?
I hope I made myself clear this is the small plunger with the leather cap which squirts a little gas into the carb when you 'blip' the throttle.
Thank you

Lee.......don't think it makes enny difference. Soak it in sumptin' iff'n you want; oil, water, gasoline. What ever it is soaked in, the gasoline will eventually wash it out .........Dell

No need to soak it in anything. It will swell to fit the bore once exposed to gasoline.

Took carb apart, took old pump part out and unpackaged the new part from the supplier - started cursing as it was nothing like the part that came out - stomped back to the house to give them a call to complain....hmmmmmm whats this? Oh...the top has a nice little cardboard cap/protector...underneath its exactly what I need....Doh!
