What is the life expextancy of the front mounted points/rotor/cap/condensor? I was thinking about just replacing the points every year but not sure about the other stuff...

A pair of Blue Streaks in my front-mount 8N lasted over 10 years before changing to EI. I put new ones on the old plate and keep it handy if the EI goes bad. The starting from the longer cycle of plug firing that you get with EI is much better, esp in the cold season.

It would depend on how many hours a year you ran the motor . Unless your a farmer you should easily get 5 years out of a set , 10 would be closer probably .

As Bruce has pointed out , proper servicing is the biggest factor . You might need to ask , but most part stores can get "Mallory" or "Bosch" grease for the points cam lobes .

Making sure you have the right resistance in the ignition system will keep your coil cool and not supply an excess of current through your points which will erode them prematurely .

Many factors come into play. Not having the resistance in the ignition circuit correct will cause the points to burn out fast. Also not putting the grease on the rubbing block does not help life of the points. I have seen them last a decade or more and then the cheap ones last maybe 30 days

prpper gap, and primary current and cleanliness? a premium set of poitns with a good phenolic, or at least nylon rubbing block and proper cam lobe lube. you should be able to get 3-5-10ys.

I have sidemount points over 10ys old... with no appreciable wear.. or non worth mentioning anyway.

I check mine once a year but never replace them. I haven't put a set in it myself - they were in it when I bought it. I figure the older they are the better. They might have actually been made when things were meant to last more than a week.

I do have a spare set hanging on the wall, though. You just never know.

Big waste of money. My tractor got new points 25 years ago.I check the gap when spring work starts. If you have a good condensor the points will last a long time.I have a spare set on hand.
