Helped neighber start a new tractor.

Got home from work today, neighbor is all excited. He drug home a 46 2N that hadn't run in 2 years. Wanted to know if I could get it started. He paid a parts tractor price for it. He put a fresh 12 volt battery in it and he could get it to turn over bypassing the starter switch. I showed him the starter on top of the tranny; it worked - big smile on his face. Next we checked for spark - none. He said the seller told him it probably needed points and that you had to take the radiator off to change the points. I showed him how to remove the dist and I cleaned and set the points. Check for spark again it it was good. Checked the oil level - good and looked clean. Good antifreeze in the rad. He had already cleaned out the gas tank and added fresh gas. Turned on the gas and the ignition and fired it up. Caught on about the second revolution. Sounded OK except for a bad exhaust gasket. Neighbor was very excited that I got it to run!
This tractor has some weird stuff on it but the weirdest thing is the steering wheel.

Old homemade power steering. I've seen them before. I'm not sure if there was an aftermarket kit. That looks homemade.

I've seen a lot of strange things added to tractors over the years but I've never seen that done to the steering. Did it have a loader on it at one time? What kind of tires and wheels is that on the back

HCooke,Ha Ha Thats just what RandyPA is lookin for,now he can send his expensive steering quickener back to JEGs.lol

Like the added clearance gear shifter. Is that 10x20" or 11x22"truck tires and wheels on it?,Hey that one might be a good slow candidate for a roto tiller on it with those tires on it.lol

neat looker.

rough welds.. but neat.

always makes a good conversation piece.

love to see the rear rims and hubs.

good for you for helping him!

Another one back from the dead, good on both of you!
That definitely is some interesting steering. I can see how it might help.
Sprocket welded to the crank pulley? Does it look like it was to run a pump?

(quoted from post at 22:16:41 05/02/13) That's a really interesting modification, though the workmanship makes me squirm a little.

ep, a lot of nose pickin & booger wiping to make those "welds".
A little neater variation:

I have a 12R22.5 truck tire on one side of an 8N that is waiting to be repaired. It is within 1/4" of the same diameter as the 11.2-28 on the other side. It has a high lug Logger retread, so it is a little larger in diameter than a highway tread tire.

Hey Gomer we could put a chrome acorn nut on the steering wheel and take the lug nut that's there now put it on the left rear wheel so it has 2 like the right rear has, give it a paint job with an old broom and put it in the Mayberry founders day parade this year. Goober you are one smart feller and the best neighbor I ever had. For safety sake tuck your tie in so that sprocket don't make ya kiss the acorn nut. Snickeeeer!

Look at that! I could have saved $200!

If the person made that to sit closer to the steering wheel it seems alot harder than moving the seat closer.
