Help getting pump back in?

O.K. so I have a used hydraulic pump on the way. I will put new gaskets in it (already got the gasket kit from here). On my '52 8N sidemount, what do I have to re-attach to get it back in? Got to be something other than just pushing it back up in there...that would just be too easy...lol. I don't have the lift cover off, if that would help I could pull it. Just trying to save some aggravation here. Hopefully no more boo-boo's with a pump. I do have a new shaft so that shouldn't be a problem. I have learned my lesson: No Hammering on the Shaft! :oops:
 
The 8N has a single control rod that comes down from the top cover.
It fits into the ball socket on the right rear of the pump.
I doubt you'd have to pull the top cover, but it may be helpful to
pull the inspection plate off the side and have a helper guide the
control lever so it doesn't get bound up, bent, etc.
 

I remember that rod now. That is on the lift handle side (right side) correct? I do have both side plates off already. Thanks so much.
 
I would pull the lift cover off so as to hook up things easier. You do have to sort of put in one end first then the other but been a few days and a few nights of sleep since I did it. A floor jack under it also helps unless you have good strong arms
 
If it was a know good pump theirs no reason to fudge with the chamber gaskets...

Glue the pump gasket to housing in place at a few spots (on the pump) with 3M 8001 contact cement....

It slides up and in,,, install one bolt in the front a few threads,,, reach in one of the inspection holes (best I remember the right side) and align the position leaver push up on the rear of the pump and start a bolt in the back EZ as pie its a one man show....

No jack needed if you need a jack you are in trouble...

If you fudge with the chamber gaskets it may not pie a pie job...
 

I thought there was more stuff to have to reach in and hook up when removing and putting the lift cover back on?
 

Fellow could not guarantee if it was working, just it had no cracks. Came out of a parts tractor (8N) so no way to know about the workings of it at this time. I thought since I have the gaskets in the kit, might as well replace them and clean the valves etc up real good?

You don't have to pull the chambers off to clean up the valves... One thing to look for is were the valves seat in the chambers on parts tractors that have set awhile the valve seats rust I have seen my share of this...

If you have to play I use CNH chamber gaskets as from time to time issues arise from other gaskets that you don't need...

The lift cover does not have to come off,,, jack the tractor up so you can lay under it and install the pump no jack needed... You have already tore it up from misinformation from folks that claim they know but forgot it are in a race to see who can have the highest post count..
 
If you should replace the pump chamber gaskets you very well may have lots of trouble installing the pump.

Some of the aftermarket chamber gaskets are thinner than the the original Ford gaskets. There is a boss at the back of the transmission that is there to align the pump when it is installed and it is a very close tolerance fit. If the gaskets are too thin it could make it impossible to install the pump. I have heard of the tabs at the front of the pump chambers being ground down some to allow installation.

Best not to remove the pump chambers if at all possible. About the only service you could do on the valves are to see if any of the springs are broken.

This why their are so many myths here,,, some do not care good info is provided all they are interested in is their post count even if they have to dream stuff up... YT needs to get rid of post counts and status ... They probably need to get out of the baby sitting service also :lol:

Why would you take the lift cover off just to change a pump -anwser- you don't know what you are doing are have never did it,,, and in the same boat the the advice came from,,, don't know what he is doing and probably never been were you are at...
 

Great pic. Thanks. I looked at some of the other pics on your page and gave me a better view of the inside of the top cover too.
 

I do have the N jacked up and just left it with some heavy blocks under the rear rubber to sit on. Sounds like it shouldn't be any harder to install than to take out the old one. I'll check the valves/springs and if those are rusted or broken, I will take the ones out of mine to install. thanks.

Forgot to add that you only live about 60 miles from me. I live outside Eclectic on state hwy 63 (just down from Kowaliga). That is if you still live around Talladega.

I have experienced this problem and it took me a little time to figure out why I was having so much trouble getting the pump back and what caused it. Once I knew that there was almost no play left between the boss and the pump chamber tabs, I was able to carefully line it up and put it into place. But, it made a rather simple job much more difficult because of the new, thinner gaskets.......
 

So right about not knowing what I am doing...lol I have the FO4 manual but there are always a few tricks that the seasoned mechanics have learned the hard way. I have done all my own mechanic work since about 1978 so I know some about cars/trucks etc. I don't know hydraulics though. I have rebuilt these babies from the ground up. I am ashamed to say that I had the hardest time with the cheby motor. I love the AOD tranny that I rebuilt with help from a guy that does the Badshoe Production videos ( ford tech).

Thanks, I better leave well enough alone. I have a hard enough time doing something with the right stuff installed. i just can't imagine if it was the wrong stuff...lol
 
That was pointed at someone else,,, why he would tell you to take the lift cover off just proves he don't know chit and a babbling Baboon... As he babbles on he must brag to prove to himself he is what he claims what he is but forgot it all while asleep.;..I think you are capable as long as you get good advice...

To help you understand how the pump goes up and rocked toward the front... The pump chambers fit over the ears on the rear of the PTO support that's all that could interfere with the instillation (look while you have the pump out) I had one that would not go in ( rebuilt the pump using aftermarket gaskets) BTDT removed the lift cover to figger it out... My advice is to save you time and unnecessary labor I have no reason to babble on I have a job and don't use YT as a baby sitting service... YT gave me a Guru patch I did not earn it (no one else did either).... Post counts and status needs to go away it means nuttin :twisted:

Thank you sir. You and many others help a lot of people on here keep these old machines working. I know you stay busy with your own shop work and appreciate you take the time to explain what could be a complicated process for the uninitiated.
 

I'll tell her. I better keep this one. We've been married 36 years this month. It would just be too hard to train another one...lol :shock:

Thank you. I'll get you some more. I started putting some new ceramic coated headers last week (since the tractor was broken and I was waiting on the hydraulic pump to get here). I got one side done after figuring out that I had to remove the bolt for the motor mount on that side and jack the engine up a couple of inches. That puppy was very tight getting in there. I had the front on ramps and the rear on my floor jack. I shook the back end to make sure it was secure as I went to fetch the jack stands for the rear, the dang thing slipped out from under the differential and the jack punctured the gas tank. I ordered a new one and will install that while I'm off and then finish the headers. There are several car shows in my area this weekend and it will take me next week to finish up this project...arrgggh :evil:

Putting in the new classic auto air conditioner last spring. A few days of working upside down under the dash about did me in. that is one of those jobs, that if I lived closer to Hobo, I would drop it off at his shop and he could call me when it was finished...lol





This was in, I think Birmingham, about 3 years ago at the track up there.





In the front field I keep cut with the 8N, just to keep this vaguely tractor related...lol. I did paint/bodywork/everything. had to learn how to use a mig welder to replace a quarter panel and other fun things. I had to frequent a paint forum to learn about that.
