9N Tranny Problems

I parked my 9N a few weeks ago after a quick spring start and lap around the driveway. No problems or anything I noticed anyway.
Jumped on it yesterday and fired it up but the gears felt strange and it was stuck somewhere between gears (letting out the clutch would just bog the engine down, would not drive)
The gear shift is moving something but feels very loose or totally disengaged when I move it to the right toward 3 and reverse.
Could not get it to neutral or anything.

Is there anyway to check this without pulling the top??? Any ideas what could of happened after I parked it???

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,

you will have to be pulling the trans top. i know on a 9n/2n that is a pita.

you will need to get it pried back out of the 2 gears it's in.

many times the shifter pattern gets worn and so dies the nub ..

i reccomend getting hte rears off the ground so you have jiggle room, and in the end, I bet you will be turning the engine backwards a hair to help unbind it from the front.

I have a 2N that has a worn out linkage. If I am careful to move the lever to neutral before moving the lever left or right it never gives me a problem. If I get in a hurry and apply side pressure to the lever before it reaches neutral, it will sometimes leave the last gear engaged while engaging the new gear, resulting in the lockup you describe.

When my tractor does this, I remove the transmission filler cap and look inside. Both shift rails will be engaged in a gear. I think mine always has one to the front and one to the rear.

Make sure the shift lever is engaged in the slot of one rail, then use a long screwdriver or prybar to return the other rail to the center (neutral) position. You will have to unload the gears by taking the PTO out of gear and rocking the rear tires while you do this. Sometimes holding the clutch down helps, but most of the resistance comes from the output shaft end.

I have never had to jack up the rear wheel to get mine unstuck, so try rocking first.

I think that one could fix this by removing the shift lever and building up the spherical area that contacts the shift rails with weld and regrinding it spherical again. I know this was done commonly by Model A Ford restorers back in the day.

You would have to look closely at the shift rail slots as well. If they are worn they may need to be built up.

As I mentioned earlier, paying attention to your shift will avoid this lockup while you prepare yourself for the permanent fix. It is a lot of work to remove the transmission top cover!
