No I did not have the reverse idler out, but someone previously could have. As far as sticking in two gears I am not sure that is the problem, but possible. If I jack the tractor tires off of the ground, and put in reverse, then it does not lock up. It only seams to do it when on the ground backing up. It also doesn't do it right away. I might back up 5-10 feet and then it does it. As my friend is cheap I only replaced the broken gear.

hanging up in 2 gears (even if its not cher problem) its basic info that should be looked at on any trans repair as bent worn parts are hard to see unless you have good parts to compare the shift forks to even then its difficult to see . :wink: :wink:

I agree with you whole heartedly that those things need to be looked at during a transmission rebuild. And it is great infomation to offer. I also appreciate the added links which might also be my problem. I would like to thank you for replying to my question as I was very stumped. Now I have some information on where to look.
