I am not sure, but I believe that I am in the same boat. Just replaced second gear in my friend 8n and now it is doing the same thing. I removed the counter shaft second gear because it was broken, not sure what caused it. Or if it is do to the current problem. I am going to work on it tomorrow, so if I find anything I will let you know. I will also be contacting the local Ford guru.

I'm working on the exact same problem also. When I started with my 8n, all the teeth were missing but 2 on the bottom shaft and 5 teeth were broken on the top gear. The reverse idler gear looked perfect. My tractor will also back up with no problem until you add a load to it, then something catches from time to time. It acts like there are teeth missing or a gear is trying to climb out of it's mesh with its mating gear. Again this only happens in reverse. All gears in the trans look good along with perfect shaft preload, etc. etc. I' stumped!!

Yep, my only problem is in reverse also. It is very frustrating, because my reverse gear looked good also. What you describe is exactly what my friend's tractor acts like. I did not have time to work on it today but hopefully will soon. I will stay in touch with what I find.
