Bad Gas Blues

I put a re-pop gas tank in the 8n when getting the old one cleaned and lined would have cost me $400+ to have done. Anyhow, it is not exactly the same and therein lies the trouble. The gas line comes down a shade too far to fit the fuel elbow snug to the carburetor. The elbow is loose.

What is the best goop that is gas resistant? Is it still form a gasket number two? Can yellow teflon tape work too?

How far off is it? Can you tighten the elbow and reshape the line?
That would be my first choice if possible.

I bent it/manipulated the line enough this evening to get it to thread in with the elbow snug. I will let the #2 Permatex set overnight, and, hopefully all will be well tomorrow. I opened the carb. up to give a brief flush to get any crud out. Unless the gas is bad, and I bought it in November, but I treated it with red Sta-bil, I should be good to go.

I worked the 8n hard last night for about 30 minutes or so and I think I got it right. Good power under heavy load; no fuel starvation signs (governor hunt/ rough running/ surging), and a smooth throttle up or down is about right. There may have been a bit of crud in the carburetor that came loose after the cleaner in a can and guitar wire went through it. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I seated the elbow deeper with Permatex #2 form a gasket to stop leaks. I let it set up for about 24 hours and that too seems to have held.

I will have to add some rubber shims to the new tank due to the rattle the hood and tank now have, but that is a minor affair.

The gas is probably good but I will change again next winter and drain the tank out completely when I winterize in November. In the winter of 11-12 I drained it---no problems. In the winter of 12-13 I filled the tank to the brim with treated gas. Carburetor was, of course, drained both times.
