8N leveling box froze up

The leveling box on the 3pt won't budge. I have greased it. Sprayed it with liquid wrench. Tried using a cheater bar on it. I worked the handle back and forth many times. It's stuck good.
Any ideas of how I can get it unstuck?

Thanks.

Remove it from the tractor for safety and heat it up real good. The with it still hot pour some ATF in to and around the moving parts. I have done this to a few and have had pretty good luck

I'll have to find some way to heat it.

How hard is it to take the box apart?
Maybe I can clean it up and put it back together?

Never taken one apart so not sure how hard it would be to do so. As for heating it up I guess you do not have a cutting torch. A propane torch will do it but will take a long time.

Figure out if gear section is locked-up or the threaded (lower) section is locked(rusted)up. Once the problem area is defined, apply heat and rust solvent as-required to get it working.

Pooh Bear, I rebuilt one on a Fergy, but it had a "9N" number on it, so I suspect it was actually a Ford leveling box.

Parts, including shaft, yoke, pinion, bearing, etc. are available from this site, among others.

The Ferguson Shop Manual contains the instructions for disassembling - I don"t know if Ford manuals have similar directions.

many times the threads rust int he lower yoke. take it off and see if this is where it is locked.

if so.. propane torch and penetrant oil...

if you have time.. invert it and mix some diesel and atf.. or mineral spirits and atf and fill up the bottom yoke.

if you have a parts washer using petro based solvents.... toss it in to soak a day or 2...

I disassembled my leveling box to replace the stripped (rusted threads) leveling screw. I dont remember the specific steps but do remember disassembly was quite easy. Based on what I remember about the internals in the leveling box, I believe it more likely the male and female threaded portions of the leveling assembly are rusted together. Disassembling the leveling box should confirm that. The manual will show disassembly if it is not obvious.

PB,
They are Very simple mechanisms.
Tap the roll pin out of the 'top hat' gear opposite the crank. Pull the crank out and the gear will come out tthe other side.
Then take the whole unit and tap it on the bench on the threaded end of the shaft and knock the plug out of the top. Then you can clean and inspect.
Reinstall in reverse order.
Very easy.

When I get time this week I'll check the bottom end first to make sure it's not froze up, then the top to make sure it's not froze up. I think the top end is froze. I might have a propane torch if I can find it. If I can take it apart that would be easier for me (I think).

Here's a parts diagram:

My middle shaft was so bent I had to saw it off just below the
leveling box to disassemble it. Then I ordered a new shaft.

I got a chance to fiddle with it today.
The lower end if what is froze up.
Gotta get small propane cylinder so I can heat it up.
Hope I don't set anything on fire doing this.

The upper gear box part turns real smooth and easy.

I took a propane torch to it today. Got the lower end off.
Cleaned the threads as best I could.
Sprayed liquid wrench all over both parts and put it back together.
Soon as I get some grease, I'll grease it good.

Thanks for everybody's help.
