Charging Problem, Need Help

I have 1950 8N with side mount distributor. Still have 6 volt battery/ generator setup. I was having a problem with not charging. Ammeter was showing below zero. I bought a new battery thinking that was the problem. Still below zero. Next I replaced regulator. That improved situation slightly. When I start Henry up now it shows below zero for a short 15 to 20 seconds than I hear a noise from somewhere, not sure what that is but the ammeter jumps but as I increase throttle so does ammeter right up to 30 amps. So now I have charge but to much. Here are some voltages to evalutate
Low idle - Battery voltage=6.49,Ammeter=10amps
Arm Voltage=6.94 ( on regulator)
Mid idle-Battery voltage=6.95,Ammeter=20amps, Arm voltage =7 to 8volts
High Rev- Battery voltage =7.13 Ammeter=30amps, Arm Voltage= 8.5
I have tried a different ammeter and results are the same.Fld terminal on regulator= zero volts. I have checked wires, made sure generator is grounded to regulator but i am at a lost now. Thanks for any suggestions.

Have you run it long period to see that current won't drop off over time? Put hydrometer on battery cells to determine battery state of charge.....it may need the 30 amps???

Those numbers don't sound to bad. The battery voltage should be 7 something volts in order for it to charge. If your battery was low it will take 30 amps for short time. If your battery volts exceeds a steady 8 volts after a good charge I would be concerned.

too much parts repalcement and not enough diagnostics.

charge the battery then test.

it may be dead like jmor said and needs hi charge right now.

Thanks for suggustions. I charged battery up for 4 hours today. Ammeter on charger showed 4 amps. Still didn't make any difference. Went I put it back on tractor up went the ammeter again from o amps to 30amps. The voltage in most cases still stays in the 6.6 to 8.0 volt range. I am going to start using tractor and monitor how things go. With such high current could I not do damage to regulator ? I still wonder if new regulator was not a dude but I don't know how to test. Thanks for help

F, and I emphasize IF,, it puts out 30amps over time, the generator will overheat. Might feel it every half hour or so. Might want to try another ammeter, too.

30 amps will boil the battery.60 amps will explode a 12v battery. An alternator with a bad regulator will blow the caps off a battery.I had to adjust the last new regulator on my 640.Batteries start gassing at 5 amps.A grounded field terminal will cause much trouble.
