Ford 8n 3 point implement will not stay in the up position.

Hi their, I have a 1951 ford 8n tractor I have a box scrapper attached to the 3 point hitch on the back. When the tractor is running in Neutral, hydraulic lever raised in the up position and the clutch led off , the 3 point hitch box scrapper stays in the up position, but then when I drive the tractor the implement goes down on the ground it does not remain up only in Neutral with clutch led off. Any help will be appreciated thank you.

pto has to be spinning for the pump to pump.

if you have a leak in the lift system.. like bad rings on the piston.. and you are idleing around the yard.. then the pump may not be making enough volume to keep up with the leak.

also.. the 3pt lever friction disc must be tight enough to keep the lever up and not let it fall down.

as a test.. lift the implement and then remove the round inspection cover where the dipstick is.

get a flashlight and mirror.. turn off tractor. I'm betting 3pt drops pretty fast. look / listen for leaks and squirts.

thank you I will try to do that and see what happens. The PTO is spinning while tractor is running, I will check it out and see what is going on and let you know. thank you.

If its my hydraulic cylinder, piston rings in order to replace the rings cylinder piston, do I have to pull the PTO shaft out in order to do that? thank you.

You don't have to remove the pro shaft for cylinder work. Just remover the top cover, can't remember how many bolts but don't remove the 4 most interior nuts that would be between your legs sitting on the seat. They hold the cylinder on.

Top cover is heavy so bring a friend or hoist. Remove the cylinder and a compressed air will fire the piston out. Check the walls, some will hone it if needed.

Hi their, I wanted to know. On the right side of the 8n tractor where I sit, their is a small lever on the side of the transmission block underneath the seat its not the hydraulic lever or the PTO engagement or disengagement. it is a small lever that can be flipped up or down position its about 4 inches long. What is that used for? thank you.

It is best to find the leak by looking through the inspection port on the side of the housing before dis-assembly. You may not fix it if it is a blown gasket or ruptured oil line or leaking relief valve and you only replace the piston seals (which may not be the problem in the first place). If you read through the past year of posts in this forum there are several discussions of the suggested inspection procedure using a light and mirror with the lift operating so oil leaks are visible.

it may drop when you step on the clutch to put in gear, as the pto stops. then the idle may be too low to lift it.

time to stop typing and pull that inspection port for a look.

this is an EZ repair usually.

Richard it's your draft/position selector. Up for Position control down for draft control when plowing etc.

Simple as that

Hi their, I am changing the hydraulic fluid its an all in one fluid transmission and hydraulic. I was thinking can I use regular gear oil in it the one you use for the rear differentials 80W90 on your rear truck axles? its a 1951 ford 8n 4 speed gasoline 4 cylinder. thank you.

not sure why you are telling the machine characteristics as I already know what an 8n is.

if you go with an 80w90 oil.. get one that is rated as MT1 or yellow metal safe. your hydro pump is full of 'yellow metal'

and I would NOT be changing the oil till I found the problem.. as the probalem may make you drop the pump...

you are getting the car before the horse.

I apologize I did not mention this earlier to you, I bought the tractor from my neighbor, he left it out side while rain days where coming. After I bought it and took it home I found out that the hydraulic/transmission fluid is watery at the dip stick then when I drained it it was really watery, so I decided to change it. thank you.
