You are more than welcome. The #194 marker lamp and similar that everyone and his bro recommends is very marginal ( less than 1/10 th of what GM used).....but amazingly enough, works most of the time and enough to suck people in. People fail to realize that GM used a 10 resistor in parallel with their little bulb!
What bulb did you end up with to make it work?

Iused a marker light off a mid '70s ford truck I had scraped a few years ago. So it is still Ford. Just a clear bulb & zip tied to dash till I find a better one. should I adda resistor also?

Don,t need to add resistor if you have it working as is. Added benefit of resistor is that system keeps charging even if bulb burns out.

Make it simple and durable (NO filament to fail) and use a DIODE... 3 Amp. 1000 PIV is a god choice and won't cost over a buck or two.

my setup looks simular except the Diode is this something that has to be on there? also when I pull the positive terminal off the tractor it dies. It does not show its charging on the amp meter. I have 4 wires coming off the Alternator.can you help explain how both wires go on the amp meter. thanks Shane

What would happen if you reversed the leads at the alternator 1 & 2 terminals. Would it just not charge? My friend has an 8n which he wired up with the terminals reversed and it doesn't seem to be charging. Thanks

ight charge & might not, depending on the specific VR used. All 10SI VRs are NOT the same design. Some go wide open/full output if sense line is open, others shut down the output for that same open. With a very small lamp and the 40 Ohm resistor inside, that may look like an 'open/too low sense voltage when the sense & excite are reversed.

I checked voltage across battery with engine off and then with engine running and got the same reading..about 12.5 volts. We are just using a small light in the #2 wire but we're going to switch the wires at the alternator and see if it does any better, and I think we're going to try that diode instead of the light.

We put the leads to the alternator like the picture shows and installed the correct diode in the line. Owner of tractor did this and checked the voltage with his el cheapo voltmeter and he says the voltage varies quickly from around 11 volts to 14 volts. I wasn't there and don't know what scale he had the meter on or even if he was using the DC scale. Is there anything else we need to check?
