Two guys at work have Craftsman tool boxes..bought months apart but both have the same lock/same key..not good..One of them asked me to try to locate a different lock..Called Sears-finally got a non-english speaking person(as usual on phone calls)He said there were 12 locks and all that could be done was order a new one and hope you got one different to the one he currently has..Anyone ever heard of such?? I"d put a hasp and a lock but he don"t want to do that. It"s a nice box and he don"t want to mess it up drilling holes in it..any thoughts on the lock swap??

They are a very simple lock. Take it out and bring it in to a locksmith. They will have a similar one I'll bet.
I wouldn't want to drill holes for a hasp on a nice box either.

Take the lock out and take it to a locksmith. I don't think he'd re-key it but he probably has a different one that will replace it.

Theirs not that many different combinations on most common locks ...
I would get another are have a locksmith re-key it and move on with life...

those locks are pretty common, the strangest lock story i have is back in 1979 i worked at a ford dealer in a small town, i had a 1953 chevy pickup, it turned out that its ignition key was exactly the same as the lock on the secretary's desk i have no idea why but the 2 keys when compared were identical

That's common in Big trucks too. I think they said Freightliner has like 6 or 7 different locks. So if you lock your keys up in the truck at a truck stop you just go around asking other truckers with Freightliners to try their key till you find one that works.

Eric,
Got another story like that - friend of mine tossed me his ford keys, he had an older Granada and a newer ford escort, I jumped in the new car and it started up and it made a weird racket, crazy sounds coming out of the engine. moved the car and asked him what was the matter with the car. He said nothing.....showed him what I had done, he told me that I used the wrong key, one was a silver looking and the other was a goldish color, said he had never done that! He started the car and everything was fine, go figure!

There's an old saying that locks are only for keeping the honest guys out. As an aside on the few variations out there, the 8N I inherited from my Dad in the mid-90's had a key switch that had been there for years, the key also fit my Grumman Tiger aircraft, and got me thinking. So I tried it in several other planes one day (a bunch of us were at the airport togetehr), nearly everyone had a key that fit another plane, and some fit several.

went on a float trip in Missouri years ago and locked my keys in the car on 2 different occasions. Old fella who worked at Ford plant in St. Louis came and unlocked the car both times. Said that he had a master key that would unlock any Ford.
No charge.

Well doesn't surprise me when your common dead bolt for your house has a max of about 30 combinations of pins and tumblers. You could buy a bunch of locks and have a key to every house in the neighborhood.

Take the lock out and bring it to a hardware store and match the barrel size. Had to do this a few years ago when we bought a truck with toolboxes on the side. About 5$ a lock.

I have a "FORD" script key for my 9N. Same key works in most Cessna door locks. For stealing, just remove the gnd. wire from one mag. Always top off the tanks upon return to the same chocks, though. :)

I prefer both magnetos working! :) One of my partners lost a mag one day on a trip to the outer banks. He had his wife and daughter with him, over water; forgot his emergency checklist and it was running rough, he didn't isolate it and fly on one mag. Almost put down on the shore, but made it to the airport. When I talked with him, he said he'd never fly it again, and that there was a boat mechanic trying to time the roughness out of it. I got a friend to fly me there and I flew it back on one mag before the boat mechanic ruined the engine. But I still prefer two. Airplanes are easier to steal than cars: no steering/key interlocks.

flag down the snap-on truck he has locks on board some also high-secureity ones uses a round key
they change them all the time so one key will fit all your boxes and add-ons

Thanks everyone-He called Sears with box model number and they sold him two for$28 I think he said and they assured him it would be different. He gave them the number of the one he did not want.
