Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeMight charge & might not, depending on the specific VR used. All 10SI VRs are NOT the same design. Some go wide open/full output if sense line is open, others shut down the output for that same open. With a very small lamp and the 40 Ohm resistor inside, that may look like an 'open/too low sense voltage when the sense & excite are reversed.

We are just using a small light in the #2 wire but we're going to switch the wires at the alternator and see if it does any better, and I think we're going to try that diode instead of the light.
