I'll have to find some way to heat it.

How hard is it to take the box apart?

Maybe I can clean it up and put it back together?

They are Very simple mechanisms.
Tap the roll pin out of the 'top hat' gear opposite the crank. Pull the crank out and the gear will come out tthe other side.
Then take the whole unit and tap it on the bench on the threaded end of the shaft and knock the plug out of the top. Then you can clean and inspect.
Reinstall in reverse order.
Very easy.

Never taken one apart so not sure how hard it would be to do so. As for heating it up I guess you do not have a cutting torch. A propane torch will do it but will take a long time.
