Electrical question OT commercial toaster

We have been using a 4 slot heavy duty toaster at work to toast the bread for a club sandwich - it was really slow when you got 4 -5 orders at once so, the management, in their wisdom went and bought a $600 waring commercial toaster - still 4 slot (why I don't know) but this one was rated at 208 volts the other was 110volts - the new one is no faster than the old one - I would have expected it to heat up quicker and toast the toast faster but it actually is hardly any quicker at all - does the fact that it is nearly twice the voltage have no difference in how quick it toasts bread? I thought maybe they wired it up wrong and it was still only getting 110v but the maintenance guy assured me that it was wired up right.
There is no room for one of those toasters used in breakfast places by the way.
Guess they just wasted $600?

PS it has an unusual looking plug - three pin with the ground pin and then one of the two flat pins 90deg to the other - according to the paperwork this is for 110v (?) but the back of the toaster says 208 v - I am 99% sure about that but will check at work today and report back later.

Compare the Watts/AMPS of the two. It is possible to have same WATTS on 120 as 240, but if that is the case, the amps would differ by a factor of two. Same Watts, same time to toast.

That's a 208/210/220 plug you are describing.
Very common on large window AC units, air compressors, etc.
I would imagine the heating elements are still regulated down to a
specific heating current so as to not burn the toast.

208V might be for three phase power. If it is and you are running it on single phase power, it won't work very efficiently.

The new toaster is only a few seconds faster than the old one - I am wondering if the comment about the three phase being the problem - could they jury rig something to work on 208 to work on single phase?

Toaster on 3 phase? I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that it would require three phase!
agree, as there are much larger commercial toasters that utilize single phase power. A case of beer says that one is single phase. Could always be a 240v model running on 208v & make it slow, but a look at the name plate information will answer that. Probably under 4000W.

this is a typical commercial grade appliance, the plug has 2 hot legs 1 neutral[the 90 degree prong] and a ground. Fast food restaurants have a 3 phased 208 service,3 phase for HVAC, FRIG & FRIERS, poly phase for appliances. This helps to keep the service load balanced.
