A first, for the carb shack...Death of a TSX33

[b:713db148fd][i:713db148fd]After approx. 5 1/2 yrs of overhauling M/S carbs, I have actually called it quits, on a rusted up TSX33. I called the owner and told him that, there isn't anything more I can do for this one......:
Pic. of the aftermath, and giving up on it!!....:

Throttle rod, and choke rod seized up by rust, and had to use a Dremmal cutter blade to extract them.!! (saved the rusty throttle plate and choke plate...not usable)
Vertually all the screw heads broke off, of the throttle, & choke plates! Also the thottlebody to bowl screws,...(all four),...broke off, just under the throttlebody mateing surface.
The main nozzel is rusted in place and even with trying to loosen it up with heat and PB Blaster....it will not budge!!!!
Mating surfaces on the top and bowl are rust-deteriated, as is the float, holding bars.....one side rust damaged and will not receive the float att. pin!!

At this point, I quit working on it, as I am not set up to re-manufacture these carbs.......overhauling them can sometimes, give a feller a sinking feeling in his gut!!!!!!!!

BTW...:..the only parts, that I think are reusable, are the floats...(not too sure about those)...and the venturi, cleaned up with a Dremmal cup brush.
LOTS of cast iron lost to the insides of this one!!!! You can see that by the amount of rust powder that came out of the bowl.

The owner is now trying to find a rebuildable TSX241B, that I can overhaul.....(If anyone has one to let go of,.....let me know!!!!)

Gary....(finally found one I cannot make work!!!!) :shock: :(

Think of it as the tractor that feeds the children of the planet. They need you don,t let it beat you.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.”
“When you are going through hell, keep on going. Never never never give up.”
“Never let your head hang down. Never give up or sit down and grieve. Find another way.”
“Winners never quit, and quitters never win.”

or just junk it!

(quoted from post at 09:48:37 04/16/13) can't remember? do you use an electrolysis bath?

S...G....;
Nope
#1 the missing cast iron, is a dead area for trying to resurect this cab....(too much damage to the mating areas, and float bar, needs to be completely replaced)
#2 Got no place to set up a El. bath.....too many pets around here and the people around here would pitch a fit if left out un-attended!!! NOT to mention the Kids!!!

i've had good luck on some rusted CI parts where I ELT'd them.. then used solder or braze to fill in a bad flange.

mind you that's way way too much work on a carb.. .. just saying.

oh well..can't save them all.

i have one off my 660 that was green coroded on the inside after the switch to ethanol gas. i couldn't ever get that carb to run right.. :)

You would be preforming miracles if you fixed that one. First time I've seen the work bench dirty, but it's still neat. :p

I have a TSX241 but I will have to check to see which one it is. I'm pretty sure it is a 241B. It was on my Ferguson 20 when I bought it. I may have stolen a part or two off of it when rebuilding my TSX458, but I think its mostly there. I can check if you want.

(quoted from post at 11:02:04 04/16/13) Gary: would my "old" carb be of any use?

Tom;
Thank you for the offer, BUT, I think that his carb is going to be replaced by an M/S TSX 241B, and he was just going to use this carb as a back-up after he found what he wants for the main carb.
Thanks for thinking of me, anyway!!!

Jason;
A TSX241, on a Ferguson????????? VERY interesting!!!!!!!!! I just sent out a TSX361 for a Ferggie TO20, that will be replacing a broken carb, and the 361 looked to me exactly like the TSX33.....plumbing and all???????

If you find that the 241 is actually a 241B, then YES I would be interested in that carb!!!!
Give me a call @ 1-406-210-0129.....my cell, and we can discuss this possibility!!!!

I say send it to soundguy he says its fixable and this would be a good test for his electrol thingeee, Ill pay the shipping just let me know how much GB. The Seriously!!!!!! LB

First time for every thing I guess. :(
I still have this one off a Farmall BN if you want a shot at redemption! LOL

Its my firm belief in life that everything [i:e7938f3ca5]can[/i:e7938f3ca5] be repaired.

If man made it, man can fix it.

Sometimes it just not worth the time, effort, or almighty dollar to do so. All of your other work speaks for itself. No question, no equal. I couldn't even imagine a bench that organized.

Not even the slightest bit of of a blemish in my book. Keep up the GREAT work!

Thanks JC;
Always appretiate ya jumping in from time to time!!!
Here's a shot just for you, of one of the carbs I blasted today....just doing a lay-out on it, and the parts inspection....:

Getting so, a guy has to check each and every part, out of a kit, before installing them!!

Gary :) [/i:0e169ac2d6][/b:0e169ac2d6]

Nice GB; LOOOOOVE that shiny brass. Just wondering where you get all of your kits??? I've tried two sources and wasn't super happy with either one. Guess I should support our host once in a while.

Worst was to find out that an 8N will definitely not run on a 9N kit...jets too small. Or possible made too small.

When I grow up I want to be just like you :lol: :lol:

JC;
I have found that using the comp. kits from YT Parts, is about as good as it gets. They have also expanded the carb 'single parts', so that I don't usually have to go anywhere else for my kits and single needed parts.
Just gotta watch close, with any where ya get em!!! That's why I always do a parts inspection lay-out......(still miss a few odd-ball made shafts, etc, etc.)

Usually you can get by with mic.'n the jets that were in the carb,.....then trial and error comes to play when doing TSX33,and 241, but have found that if ya buy the TSX33 kits, then if need-be, you can drill the jets out to the TSX241, 241B spec's.!!! Not too much saving in $$'s that way, but every cent saved....you know how it goes!!! :lol:
Found also, that sidemount 8N engines, will most times need a slight bigger oriface..main jet wise, and def. bigger econo jets than the front mt. 8N!!
JMHO!!
I don't do clean-up carb work in my shack.....I do "Full-on overhauls"....I fig. if the guys want to pay....then they should get "the extra mile!!!!"
Anybody can throw parts into a carb.....OVERHAUL's are a dif. bag of worms, to my way of thinkin'!!!

Gary :wink: [/i:30e6a68d16][/b:30e6a68d16]

The next time I set up my electrolysis rig I'll probably dunk it in the tank.
It's just a spare I took off a parts tractor so if it gets fixed good, if not I'm
not out anything.
I've had far too many projects going on lately to worry about that one! :lol:
Here's a picture of my winter/spring project when I rolled it out for the first ride.
1980 Kawasaki KZ1000ST E2. Shaft drive. It was a basket case.

There"s another option if you choose to pursue it, I"ve used it with success on alot of stuff and it will clean out the interior areas also. Citric acid is what its called, and all you do is mix it with water and let it soak. Friendly to pets and kids, if they were to taste it, its good and sour, its the coating they put on warheads if your familiar with the candy. Soak the the carb and maybe change the water a time or two and it should come clean and loosen up all the frozen stuff too.

Gary,, So you found one in worse shame than mine,,
thanks for the great job on my two carbs, haven't run them yet, tractor going into paint next week
