Ford 2n Governor

My 1942 Ford 2n does not have an oil line running to the governor. Whoever owned it previously, plugged it with a bolt. I did know it should be any different until I started looking at other governors and there is a brass inlet screwed in where mine just has a bolt. I"ve been having problems with it running and suspect the governor may be an issue. Is there suppose to be on oil line running into it or not? If so, where does the line come from, mine does not have one.

The first 9Ns and possibly some 2s did not have an oil supply to the governor. Later Ford realized the bad design and added the oil supply. Im not sure of the change date.

In your case, since you have the inlet you could add the line. It should run from a brass elbow at the bottom of the oil filter reservoir, around the front of the motor to the governor. Im sure you could find a diagram with some searching to clear things up.

I have 3 early 9Ns which do not have the oil line. They are over 70 years old and works just fine. Unless you are going to run a 2 bottom plow 8 hours a day for a couple of weeks every year, I think you will be fine. Actually, the governors without oil lines have less wear than a couple of governors with oil lines. Oil attracts dirt.

Mark,Over yonder in Iowa :)I'm with HCooke.I have a 43 2N with thousands and thousands of hours on it.Plowing, planting and cultivating for years. It has no oil line. The engine has been rebuilt about four times I know of since 1957 and when I rebuilt it last year the governor was still in good shape.I also have a 49 8N with way less hours on it. With a oil line to the governor that was flat worn out balls coming through the case last summer that I had to replace. So I'm not sure if the line is even a improvement.
