lots of 9n wireing smoke

I was happily bopping out thru field on my 41 9n when black smoke began to roll out from under the cowling and the tractor quit. When everything cooled down the only apparent problem was a fried wire running from the amp meter to the bottom terminal of the resistor block. I replaced the wire but when I try to hook up the battery there is an obvious short. My guess is a bad cutout relay or resistor block but I"m a far cry from a mechanic. Any ideas? By the way it" a standard 6 volt system with a single pole generator hooked up per this forum"s wiring diagram. Replaced the wiring harness about 8 years ago. Any help will be appreciated and maybe help keep me from replacing parts at random.

If you disconnect the wire from that bottom resistor terminal to the
cut-out do you still have a problem when hooking up the battery?
The cut-out being open or closed shouldn't have caused smoke
while driving, but if it has an internal short to ground it would.
So would a wire that rubbed bare on the frame somewhere.
Do you have an ohmmeter to test with?

put a test lamp inline with the neg bat cable.. then start pulling wires til the lamp goes out.

found your short.
