8n Electrical Issues

I found an 8n for 500 bucks in good shape. oweber
says he just spent around 750 in it re-doing
electrical and carb and some other things and his
wife said it has to go. He said it runs fine then
burns the coil out. He said its a 6v system. I think
I can buy it and sell it and make a few bucks for
some other projects but what do you think is wrong
with it?
 
Excessive coil current. If it is still 6 volt as he said, they may have left
the original ballast resistor (on the back of the dash) out of the circuit.

Front or side coil?

The most likely cause is leaving the key on.

If it has a front coil, the next likely cause is no ballast resistor or bypassing the ballast resistor.

Google 'wiring diagrams JMOR' and find the one that fits the tractor.

if it's only issue is burning the coil out.. and it runs 'ok' and looks 'ok' then 500$ is awesome.

most liekly it is a wireing issue.

like coil is wired hot al the time.. not switched.. or if a front mount.. as said.. might not have the ballast ressitor.. if it is 12v.. may be wrong coil / resistor combo.

you can likely make 1000$ off it by buying at 500 and selling at 1500 and just checkignthe wireing and adding a coil or resistor.. net profit of maybee 950$

The tractor is well worth $500.

And you are doing the gentleman a favor; if he couldn't get it running after dropping $750 in it, you are saving him money & frustration.

For some folks, keeping an old tractor running would be like me trying to play golf.

it's a lil ugly.. but I'd have arm wrestled you .. and cheated. to win it for 500$

frankly.. for 500$.. if it ran and had no tin I'd have gotten it.. and i don't even particularly like N's.. :)

the engine alone is worth it.
 
Yep, that's a good deal. Google 'JMOR Wiring diagrams' and you will find the wiring diagram for that tractor.
