Today, I was working in the yard doing some landscaping. My wife, my daughter, and my son were all in the yard watching me as I was shoveling a pile of dirt into the trailer to go dump in another location. They were busy in conversation as I was working, when my son told my wife, "I"m going to work out tonight". I said, "why don"t you grab another shovel and start working out right now"......You"d a thunk I told him to go get a hair cut. Or go get a job. Why can"t young"uns understand that a shovel is a good workout?

Must be related to my boss's kids. They haven't worked a day in over twenty three years. Still living off mommy and daddy.

Sorry I can not feel sorry for you. If you babied them all there life then you reap what you sow. You need to teach a child there is no free ride and when it comes to chore time they do chores side by side. One big problem now days is children are not taught what a good days work is or even what work is.

I really can't complain about my kids. I have 3 great kids. This boy that I am talking about has recently graduated from college, has started working in the field of his choice, involved in church, plays bluegrass music (mandolin) instead of video games, never in any trouble.....Just this one instance, the look on his face, was like..Huh? Shovel? What? LOL

Doesn't matter how you raise them. My buddy has 3 kids, oldest is 46, youngest is 35. All raised the same way I raised my kid: "If you eat here, you work here". Well, all 3 of his kids are just fine responsible adults & parents, but only one of them will work a garden or do yard work.

Same w/ my daughter. She keeps the house clean but the yard would look like a jungle if the son-in-law wasn't around!

I have to agree with Bruce. You can do your absolute best to raise them up the right way, but you cannot control what will happen while they are at school, or other activities either. The school where my kids went did more harm than good - particularily the high school teachers and administrators (in my case).

We were raised on a tobacco farm so Daddy taught us how to work early in life. He put me driving mules trucking tobacco when I was 6 which be considered a terrible today. But it didn't hurt anything but my feelings at times and later came enjoy farm work with my Daddy. He believed in continuing education--He never stopped teaching us how to work. Thanks Daddy!!!

My youngest one told me he wanted $20 to mow the lawn. I gave it to him and the wife went nuts! That night when he was done with supper. I told him I wanted $8 for his supper. He got all huffy and threw the $20 back at me.
I think it worked. He is 22 now and already a shop forman at a glass business.

have a nephew who thinks that working [labor] for a living is somthing in the past,, he can't find a job that will pay over $20hr,, just because he thinks he is a computer genuis, like the rest of his generation,, asked him to mow and rake my lawn, heaven forbid, thought the sky was falling down on him,, yet he forgot that i helped raised him, and he lived in my house rent free, with food at the table... now he wounders why i never answer the door when he and wife, kids show up,, resturant closed...

I am very proud of my daughter an only child. She dropped out of high school because they did not consider rodeo a sports event like football basketball volleyball. Her work out was bucking bales and horses plus a town job. She worked and paid her own way and got a GED and a 4yr degree in criminal justice in 3 yrs and is now is the sup. in district court. She needed a tune-up now and then like most kids but the only thing we gave her was support. I will bet most of you will be proud of yours as they all bloom at different times some just do it later. They are our future.

Asked my grandson age 7 to rake up some scraps of wood from the wood splitter area for the burn can. Told him he could earn $5.00 for allowance, told me he didn't need it he had $42.00 saved up.
When it came time for dessert I told him he didn't need any cause he was getting chubby. I think time skipped a few seconds, he couldn't believe I was serious. I enjoyed ice cream by myself that night.

Glad things worked out. I"m glad to hear about the mandolin. I play Bluegrass guitar, banjo, and am starting mandolin.

Joe

I spent about 3 hours today cutting the brush/trees overhanging the edges of the front "lawn" as grass cutting started today - son hauled all the brush off and all I had to do was haul the trees out with the tractor - he had by far the tougher job. Then put the plow on and plowed the food plot and the garden. Then put the finish mower on and cut the front - he helped me change all the implements - sure makes it easier with 2 people. He doesn't pay rent, but does help around the place when he's off work. I grew up on a dairy farm and never questioned the work to be done starting a 4:30 AM every day and finishing after about 15 hours of work (including school time when in session). Never even knew that I had a choice (NOT)!

Bluegrass is great Joe. you"ll have to come to Springfield this Friday night to GOBS (Greater Ozarks Bluegrass Society). Big jam every second Friday of the month.
