Steering box question

Hey everyone another steering question here. I see lots of posts on using oil vs. grease in the steering box. I recently purchased my first 8N and the guy told me to use 90w oil which seems consistent with everything I read. Since he had it for 6 years after getting it from another older gentleman and seemed to maintain most of his tractors well (maybe not pretty) I am questioning why today while taking a closer look at the steering box I see a grease fitting on the upper left side of the steering gear box and another on the steering column where sounds like there should be a screw. I presume at some point there was grease in it...perhaps should still be. What is the best way to check what it has or since it has these fitting should I just go ahead and continue to fill it with grease. When its warm and being used a bit you can see some oily substance near its lower bolt (which is snugged up). The substance does have more of a grease like feel than oily consistency. Thanks for your thoughts on how to proceed.

without probing the box thru the fill hole.. or pulling a side cover a tad.. you can only guess.

if you put grease in it.. ise a 0 or 00 ep grease. in 62 ford decided that was a better idea for those older steering boxes, seals.. etc.

your call. if the seals were tight and diameters good.. sh'll hold oil... if a lil loose.. then thin flowable grease is a good fill.

ps.. if it leaks at that cover.. might be a bad oring
