8N engine rebuild

MY 1948 8N is in need of a engine rebuild. I sent it out to a motor shop where it was torn down. All measurements were taken and I ordered a full kit from YT. I must say that the kit is very complete, and the price was not bad. Next problem; we found that there is a crack from a intake valve to the cylinder. So I need a new block. OK, I found several blocks and the question is, do you want a front mount or a side mount distributor. I have a front and would rather have a side. The question is, can I use a side mount with the kit I ordered? What are the internal parts which may need to be changed? Thanks, Ed

One difference to check for could be sleeve thickness. Most later model (Side mount distributor was "52, the last year of the 8n) came with thick wall sleeves. Some early model engine blocks were bored for thin wall sleeves. Other than that the bearings in your kit will depend depend on the crank and whether or not you have it ground.

A good engine rebuilder can often weld that crack. You might want to have that discussion with them. The overhead valve heads on heavy tractors, trucks, CATs, are ofter cracked and welded. Even though the N has valves in the block, it can be a candidate for welding or stitching. The thick wall sleeve will keep exhaust and antifreeze out of the cylinder. If the rest of that block is good, I think you will be $$ ahead to have it repaired. Any other block you might buy is just another crap shoot.

Pretty much all the parts are the same between the front and the side mount and most kits are set up to cover both. Side mount is the way to go. Better distributor system and more compression so a tad bit more HP in the long run

You will need a front mount timing cover and a side mount generator and mounting brackets.

When the distributor was put on the side the block was also changed on the outside. The generator bracket is different and so is the generator. The oil filter is mounted in a different place and so is the oil filler tube.

Stick with the older front mount block.

You've got the wrong people working on that engine. The don't know squat!
