starter switch solenoid question.

I just got a NAA, 6 volt positive ground.

It had starting issues and needed to be shorted across the solenoid to start, the starter switch was bypassed.

I replaced the wiring, the solenoid, starter switch and key switch. The starter switch will not work, but has continuity when pressed.

Ironically, the new solenoid has a button on it that when pressed will crank the motor. I"ve never seen a solenoid like this.

Everything is wired correctly, the starter switch will not work.

What am I missing?

Check the wire from the Solinoid to the start switch. If it's got a break in it, you won"t get the starter to work with the switch. If the wire is good, then your switch has gone bad or something is keeping it from going to ground. Hope that helps!!

i have the same problem with my 600
ordered it new from here. only way it will crank is to push the button on bottom of solenoid.
bad solenoid, as i temp. took one off my 8n and works with it. lmk your outcome.

Assuming you are using the 3 wire solenoid here.
If you have an ohmmeter, measure between the little post
and each of the big ones.
To one big post you should read very low resistance.
To the other big post it should be open.
The open post goes to the starter, the one with low resistance to the battery.
It won't work backwards.

Mark may be right, also watch when you push the button on the solenoid, it may stick. Mine did and you can poke it again or tap it with a wrench to get it unstuck. Make sure it's in neutral. The good Lord was watching me that day!

Mark was right, it was backwards.

Royse, thanks for explaining how to check it.

You would think somebody would just mark the thing with a B and S on the lugs.

Thanks everyone,

Solenoids with push buttons on them have been in use on Ford cars and trucks since 1937.The NAA uses the same solenoid.Grounding the small terminal cranks the engine.

8n and 600 mounts different correct, but still works. i got an 8n on my 600 right now as the new 600 one was bad.
