New alternator sparking

I just was hooking up my brand shiney new $26 Advance Auto 10si rebuilt alternator , and noticed that when I brush the battery wire, the big one that goes to the the stud on the back, against the stud it sparks.

Seems unlikely this is normal but with solid state electronics who knows. Anyone know if it is supposed to act this way?

(got to resolve it soon - the warranty on it is something like 2-1/2 days).

A TINY short-duration spark would be normal.

The REAL test is, does the battery drain overnight or in a day or two, with the alternator hooked up.

BTW, it is NOT wise to be mucking around with the connections at the alternator with the battery connected up. Disconnect the battery cable, make any needed electrical repairs, then re-connect the battery cable.

Not a momentary thing, and it's really grounded - the wire gets hot in a few seconds.

Dug out my multimeter and the battery terminal on the alt is solidly grounded - same reading between the stud and ground as I get touching the prongs on the meter together.

Guess it is time for a trip back to Advance. Should have had them test it when I bought it!

"the wire gets hot in a few seconds"

And you didn't state that in you first post WHY??????????
