i bought an old howse 500 brush hog & wanna check/change the oil in the gear box ..,read few post about how to service it ..,but can't find what kind of fluid to put it ..,
I bought marine sae 80w-90 lower unit gear lube from walmart ...,figured i could always take it back...,is this what i want or ??? anybody ???

I don't know about that specific gear box, but I think you guessed well with what you got. One thing I would do is catch the oil you drain out and play in it and "sniff" it to determine if it is the heavy gear oil one would expect in a gear box. If the "old oil" was less viscous than 80/90 gear oil you may want to reconsider what to replace it with. My theory is, however, any reasonable and clean lubricant is better than no (or contaminated) lubricant when dealing with gears and bearings.

Seems like the real old stuff has 90 wt in it. I'm not too worried on stuff like that as long as it isn't too thin to run out of the old seals in 5 minutes.

My King Kutter "hog" uses 90 weight gear oil, if that helps any. I had an old Bush Hog I hardly used and it leaked so I just kept filling it with what ever oil I had around, figuring any oil was better than none. Left it in the woods when we sold that place, it was in bad shape.
