8N Rear Axle Seal Question...

I bought a 52 model and the previous owner said he went through the rear.
The brakes are oil soaked and i tore it apart today.
The inner and outer seals look new, soft and pliable.
The axle shaft gasket Part No: 8N4284 was shot.
Question - will this alone cause it to leak ?

My opinion is it will leak if it is overfull with transmission oil. Others will tell you if you take out the bottom bolt on the inspection plate and fill till it leaks out, I prefer leaving it about a 1/2 inch lower than that.

That small cork gasket, PN 8N4284, is sandwiched between the end surface of the wheel hub and the tappered roller bearing cup surface.

This gasket must have gobs of gasket sealer applied to it, to prevent the oil from leaking through the gaps between straight wheel hub splines and the tapered axle shaft splines to the brake shoe region.

The inner lip seal incoported on 50N & up helps seal out the oil.
Previous 48 & 49N models did not have this seal.
