Hello,
I have a 1939 9n. I found that the best way to adjust the points is to remove the distributor from the block, it is keyed so when you reinstalled it there is not chance of mounting it 180 out. If you have not spark it may be the coil. I have a 6 volt system and have had to replace the coil twice in 6 yrs. Tractor supply carries all the parts you need. I replace plugs, points and coil as a group.

I don't think you could see or adjust the points with the hood and radiator off. It just takes a few minutes to remove the dist (two bolts) and it can only go back on one way (unless you really force it) because of the offset tang that mates with the cam shaft. Gap is .015"

scotty.......the rotor can point ennywhich way. Ittza 2-bolt OFFSET drive that connects the dizzy tang to the camshaft slot. Just finger install the 2-bolts and then install the rotor and ROTATE the rotor until the OFFSET tang fits into the OFFSET camshaft slot. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh? Remember the 4-nipple dizzy firing order is 1,2,4,3, CCW. The capple has the correct sparkie connection molded by each nipple. Usually newbie shadetree mechanics gitt sparkies 3&4 reversed. These N-engines are SOOOooo GOOOoood they will start and run on just 2-cylinders. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I found on my 9N front mounted distributor the easiest way to remove the distributor is to loosen the 6volt generator and take the belt off use a 1/2" stubby wrench to loosen the two bolts on the distributor remove it from the tractor after you removed the distributor cap and coil. Gap is 0.15
If you have a continuity tester check to make sure you did not ground out the points before you reinstall the distributor.
Firing order is marked on the cap cylinders are 1-2-3-4 #1 is closest to the radiator.
