growling 3 point

70 years of wear inthe pump.

many of them knock a bit.. worry more when it quits groaning and knocking. :)

My guess , its time to do a medical examination of all internal working parts . After all these years of active service it probably needs a couple new parts & special TLC . I'm not as old as it is , but my joints have caused me lots of moaning for years . Get yourself a good repair manual & study before tearing into it . Also find a strong friend to assist with the lifting . If you are anything like me , I hate waiting & letting it get any worse & then leave me tractor-less . Zane made a repair kit for the 8n lifts . You can probably find him over on the n tractor klub site . Good luck & God bless , Ken

Growl or more like a knocking?
Knock, knock, knock get worse with heavy loads?
I have one with a worn pump that sounds like this.
I've had it about 6 years.
Previous owner said it had done this for the 20 years he'd owned it.
It only gets used for driveway grading and gardening, so it gets used.

I agree-Dad"s has knocked some for years especially after driving 7 miles to do deer plots.Let her knock unless it gets really loud..If really loud, dig in and fix it before it slings apart and does other damage.

It's more of a growling noise then a knock. I have a 6 ft. blade on it but the 3 point doesn't have any down pressure. Are these N's supposed to have down pressure ?

No they do not have down pressure.
Most 3 pt hitches do not unless they are aftermarket setups.

Are you shure it's not coming for the trans. Does the sound seem to go away or get loader when the clutch is in or out?

Come to think of it , it is quiet when I push the clutch in. With the 3 pt. down there is less growling. When I raise it up the growling is loud.

Since you have to have the pto running while the 3pt operates might be a bearing. Try it without putting the pto on (I know it won't lift)and press the clutch to see if there's any noise.

It could be the bearing in where the shifter fork is to engage the pto is or possibly the bearing on the end off the pto shaft. You can try to take a piece of garden hose and put one end to your ear and the other end, with PTO engaged, to the side of the case near the trans than try near the where the pto shaft comes out. The sound might be hard to tell but you may hear it louder in one spot than the other. I know that it may look dumb to poeple watching and isn't very HiTech but it does work.
The bearing at the pto shifter rail section will involve a split. It might be possible to drop the pump and try to remove it from there but I have never done it that way so I can't say for sure. The one at the end of the pto shaft is an EZ fix just pull the shaft and replace the bearing.
Also if you've been out brushogging and hit sometime you may have bent the pto shaft which could also cause the bearings to wear faster. If you do take out the pto shaft check it in case it's not straight.
You can check your FO4 manual for the pto parts I talked about.
