9n runs hot

gary in pa

New User
Early 9n runs hot with 5foot bush hog 10 inch light grass after 15 or 20 minutes.

50 50 antifreeze. New radiator. Two inches head space.

Any hiccup Iin power. Spits steam and water and dies. Won"t start for an hour.

Governor is weak and sometimes struggles to power up.
Is that the problem ?

How to fix ?

Also looking for one piece correct dash no cracks.

Thanks. Gary

Throwing out some ideas here.....
Was the block cleaned out when the new radiator was put in?
Does it have a fan shroud?
If it has a thermostat in it, is it opening and letting water circulate?
I can see it spitting steam if its over-filled, but getting hot enough to shut
down would seem like either its REALLY hot, or an electrical (coil?) problem.
Do you have access to an infrared thermometer to see how hot it actually is?
Is the gas in the tank boiling?
You mentioned the governor, is it not working or is the carb not responding?
Maybe its running too lean.

Rebuilt head put on and top was cleaned.

No shroud.

Gas not boiling

Has a thermostat. Fairly new. Maybe not working.

Don't have a thermometer jot measure.

Gary........check yer slanted radiator hoze fer incorrectly installed THERMOSTAT. (pointy end towards radiator) Don't have a thermostat???, don't know??? SQUEEZE the slanted radiator hoze fer a lump. While thermostats can malfunction, they're pretty bulletproof. You doubt? Remove the "lump" in yer radiator hoze and try running without thermostat. Won't hurt 'nuttin'.

Per yer description, it takes about 15-mins fer BLOCKED radiator hoze to cause engine to "burp" and spray water over yer weird squarecan 4-nipple frontmount dizzy. Make certain you have the rubber OVERFLOW tube installed down the side of the radiator, past the dizzy. Also, make certain ALL the gaskets are installed for the dizzy ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Sometimes I just have to take a smaller cut when hogging. I watch my radiator. If it starts to steam to much I shift down a gear and-or take a half a cut for a round or so. Sometimes it takes cutting some areas twice at different heights. I only have trouble over heating when I'm trying to over work the tractor. Even with no gage, the tractor will let you know when it can't handle what your cutting.

If blades on bush-hog are not sharp tractor may be working too hard. I use an angle grinder to sharpen them occasionally and it seems to reduce power requirement at PTO in heavy cutting areas.

Ya got a circulation problem. Also the oil does alot of the cooling so it needs to be full and 30w. Thermostat flat side to flat head water pump, belt tension all need to be dolng their job, check the entire sys,. You should be able to hog all day even at 90 degrees plus with it and it should stay cool.I did take all my shrouds off and still run cool but Royes right about them they should be on. Dont keep overheating it.
