OT : Oil Filters - Good / Better / Best ?

I went to O'reilly's today for an oil and a filter . Wife's car is a 95 Cutlass Supreme with 140k miles . I have used Mobile 1 synthetic for the last 80k miles .

They have Microgaurd , Wix , Fram , Fram Tough Gaurd , Fram High Mileage , Bosch , Mobile 1 , K&N , AC Delco , Motorcraft .

I tried a web search to figure out the best bang for the buck but had no luck .

A $5 filter every 3K or a $12 filter every 5K ?

Anybody know of any sites that have facts ? I found lots of opinions all over the spectrum .

GM oem filter recommendation. Call a dealship for replacement recommendations.

Be sure the filter has a "pressure relief" valve.

I have cut open all the major brands, and I am the most impressed with WIX. Purolator is a close second. About the poorest quality were the Fram (they also make the Microguard) way fewer pleats than the others and cheesy cardboard end caps rather than steel end caps on the Wix and Purolator.
Delco used to be a good filter, but some applications have gone to what is called the Ecore design, and isnt much better than a Fram.
So to sum it up, buy a Wix or Purolator. I think Walmart is selling Purolator classics for $3.79, Wix are usually $6-7.

If you are using Synthetic oil(like I am in both vehicles), use the filter reccommended for same. Synthetic oil lasts a looong time (that is the point of it). My regime is; change FILTERS every 6000kms (add oil as req'd). So far I have changed the oil in my 350,00Km truck twice in 5 yrs (got it with 210,000Kms), and once in 50,000Kms in the wife's car. Check Google for some REAL interesting College tests on Synthetic oil. It is no longer "if it's dirty -change it". A new filter (the good kind) , takes care of most of the dirt, and you will see the difference on the dipstick after you change the filter. HTH

There is only like 3 car battery makers and about that for oil filter makers they just put there different names on them. As far as the 3K or 5K It is a sell more oil and filter deal. Oil never wears out it only gets dirty. I change oil 2 times a year spring and fall. My stuff has 100k to 217k, the 217 drips a bit but no consumption. Oil is oil from walmart brand to Mobil, some may have a bit more detergent. tomato tomoto. Oh and by the way we will never see the day we run out of oil the earth is constantly making it we have not even put a dent in the crude availability or as the greenies say "peak oil" so you can trust your car to the man who wears the star, the big bright Texeco star
