9-N loose steering

(quoted from post at 07:22:48 03/07/13) Is there any kind of lash adjustment on 9-N steering
gear box?

Yes, but it is done with different thicknesses of thrust washers It is in the FO-4 service manual.

R Geiger is right. I will add that wear on the pinion bearing can increase backlash, too. If you can move the steering wheel up and down, the pinion bearings are worn.

Now the bad news: normally, loose steering in a 9N/2N is caused by wear of the pinion and sector gears. Be prepared to replace all the gears, as they all seem to wear out pretty evenly. My pinion gear was almost completely gone, but the tractor still steered, although there was about a half turn of backlash!

any 2n or 9n I have been around had too much play for washers to shim up. They almost alwise need all three gears replaced. used ones are impossible to find. You have to spend the $$$ for new ones.
I replaced mine in 1999. back then a set of three gears was $475.00.

I saw a recent price for replacements in a catalog I got, in my own situation I'd have to question the value of replacing them on my 9N because there are so many other things that are getting worn out too (my steering it still very good however). This was the place that had the new N engines for something in the $3-4 thousand range.
