transmission bearings

I've had a growling noise in my loader tractor (8N
254079) since I got it, maybe 3 or 4 years ago. It
is quite noisy when in gear , so I got a used main
shaft for it and finally got around to removing
the loader and am going to fix it while the loader
is off. The main shaft and race is pitted so I'm
going to change that . Before putting it all back
together I plan on mating the transmission and the
motor and try see if the growling noise has gone.
How ever , if not I am wondering how hard it is to
put new bearings in my transmission , I notice in
the parts book there is only 4 -7066 bearings and
1- 7120, is this a practical move for a backyard
repair? or would I be better off having it done by
professionals? TIA

I did mine myself when I did the restore. It's easy if you have the tools for it.ie puller and a dial indicator. You need to check the end play and adjust with shims. Good luck

Hi Bruce , could send me some info on a dial indicator, where can you get one ? I know I can get puller at Princess Auto , are the indicators there too? Thanks

It can be done no special tools needed if you use yer head... Let the weight of the gears drive the BRG's off,,, the input BRG will need to be pulled tho...

As for preload shoot for ZERO end play no indicator needed use yer feel... As long as the shafts turn fairly EZ and do not bind you will be good to go...
