9N alternator

I have had a problem with my 12 volt charging system since I tried to jump my truck last year. It could be a coincidence but my battery charges and I use the tractor for a while and the battery is dead. I replaced the alternator and when I put a tester on the battery I get a scrambled read out while it is running. The alternator is currently hooked up with a one wire system which is the way it came. I am wondering if I need to change to a 3 wire. Any help s appreciated. Thanks, Gary

A digital VOM will not work with these old ,achines. Too much noise from the ignition. You need to get an analog VOM.

Yep many of the digital meters do odd things around engines. I am lucky my meter works just fine. As for 1 wire or 3 wire the 3 wire is far better and does not need the high RPM to start charging as the 1 wire does. You do know most auto part stores with test your alternator for free don't you??

I took the alternator to Orileys and they said that it was bad. I bought another one but still having some charging issues

Ya if it is a one wire that is where the problem is. Take it back and get a simple 3 wire like for a 1980 Chev pick up on AC not power any thing. At O'Reilly's it should cost around $45 and that is with a life time warranty. Been using those for years now and if it does go bad you take it back and they hand you a new one for free.
