Rebuild done!

Well we finally got the 51 back together after our engine rebuild! Boy does she sound pretty! The whole process went pretty smoothly! After a couple days working on the head we got it ground enough so the pistons don"t hit. Do those gaskets take some time to seal up. Like the timing cover gasket? I noticed some oil was leaking I believe from the front cover. Not a bad leak and it may have even stopped. Did not use gasket sealer on the gaskets, just on the edges by the rope seals. I imagine it takes a bit of running to get the rope seals to seal? Bought a timing light and got the timing set pretty darn close to perfect. We did install an EI on it. A little paint sometime in the future and getting my new tires installed and she will be a beauty! Can"t get the short pin out of the rocker on the back to insert the long pin that is supposed to be there. Tried heating it several times with map gas and no such luck. Any way to get that out? Thanks for all the help in this journey!

Glad you got it running. I use gasket sealer for the reason you mention but seems like the only way you will not get a bit of leakage is not to run the machine!

Lisa.........congratulations on grinding the old flathead. That is the result of excessive milling at the automotive machine shop. Most people would buy the later 6.5:1 8N head. Arn't timing lites amazing? The first one I had, had an orange lite in heavy rubber sleeve. The one I have now, is chrome plated and will light up the sky even in daytime.

As fer the "long pin", you only need it fer the jingle-jangle bars that hold up yer sickle-bar mower. And when you do use the "long pin", the rocker pin hassta be "hollow". Map gas is NOT HOT enuff. And VERY CAUTIOUS 'cuz you'll break the castiron "ears" that hold the short pin. ........Dell

Nope you get to do some warranty work,,, the pays terrible but its part of the learning process... Warranty work pay is so bad I learned to find leaks before I install it....

BTW I do apply a very thin coat of RTV to the timming cover gasket it has eliminated warranty issues  The first try it leaked so I removed and sealed it with RTV they all get it no its no fun work'n for free....

Congrats on the rebuild Lisa. Glad it went well. We would love to see some pictures when you get a chance..

On the timing cover gasket leak, have you tried to tighten the nuts (bolts) with the engine warm. Sometimes it helps and the price is right. Just don't get carried away.

Otherwise just live with it (all N's mark their territory) or break out the wrenches and pull the front end again. If you go that route, I would use a CNH gasket. Not much more money and you know you got a good gasket. I'm also a fan of Permatex Black RTV, but never use it on a cork gasket. Remember a little goes a very long way.

I will bring the camera with tomorrow and take a few pics. We haven't painted it yet and still have to throw the hood on and new fuel line, had some other project come up had to get done!. It has oversized tires on the rear 14.9x26 which we will replace sometime before I put it to work with 11's. Tin is actually pretty good so I think once we take the plunge to get her blasted and painted she will look real nice. I haven't tried tightening the bolts up more on the timing cover as one was stripped out and we had to re-thread the hole. I think we may just live with it it's not a bad leak.

Yes I was amazed at the timing light. Have never used one before!! that sucks about the pin, it's got the rocker with I believe 4 holes, and I found a long pin basically just cause you don't see them much with these tractors anymore. I think I will just leave that alone for now!
