Re: 12v conversion - now hard/no start when cold - ytmag kit

Tricked by 'classic view' again.

In classic view, only one post showed up. In modern view, it's a long thread w/ multiple replies.

Oh well......

Wade........the carb settings in the Ford manual ain't worth diddly shut. Just use Gary's recommended technique, it works!!! NO ARGUE!!!!

From yer original complaint, I'm gonna make a WAG that yer complaining about the weird 4-nipple front mount dizzy. Yer problem is in yer sparkies and never was yer carb. (but is now!!! keep yer itchy-twitchy fingers off'n them handy-dandy carb tweek'ems)

Surprizingly enuff, 90% of all carb problems are found in the ignition system.

You do know ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove the weird 4-nipple dizzy and change the points (0.015") on the kitchen table, don't you??? Just un-snapple yer capple and letter dangle. remove the 2-bolts and walk to the kitchen table. Change/adjust the points (0.015") and CLEAN the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points before re-installing. Me? I use a clean $1-bill clamped between the points and pull. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that.

Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and then install the rotor. Now rotate the rotor until the OFFSET drive tang fits the camshaft OFFSET drive slot. Now tighten yer 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh?

Ennytime you have "starting issues", CHANGE yer sparkies. NO ARGUE!!!
Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". Don't throw yer sparkies away; just clean'n'dry 'em one-atta-time in HOT running engine and save'em fer the next time. (and there will be a next time) .........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Wade.........resistor makes WEAK SPARKIES, which is really the cause of yer original complaint of hard starting.

HOWSOMEVERS: the weird 4-nipple frontmount square coil DEMANDS the "infamous ballast resistor". NO ARGUE!!!

SUMMARY: 2-resistors inline like flashlite batterys causes weak sparkies. use ONLY the "infamous ballast resistor"; understand???

Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

If you purchased the one wire alternator kit that
came with a new 12 volt square front mount coil all
that you need is the original ballast resistor. Do
not use the other resistor that came in the box. I
have purchased two and installed them on my 1949
front mounts. Both tractor will start regardless of
how cold it gets.

I just replaced my alt, and, I'd messed up with my readings of the coil resistance prior to the new battery, and I had put 2 resisters in line. By the time I figured it all out, I put the coil I thought was bad, back on, and, took out one resistor...New alternator, and BAM, starts on ONE revolution in cold weather. Amazing.

So, check the resistance of your coil. Normal I guess is 1.6 Ohms, and figure 1 for your resistor. Then, 7.5 v / 2.6 = 2.8A. Something around that up to 3.6 I think is 'good'...I was running like 2.1 and no wonder no love when starting.
