I apologize for not being clear. I assumed you simply measured the diameter of the zerk and called it 1/4". I do understand the difference between NPT and UNF/UNC thread counts, pitches, and nominal diameters.
You wanted a drill size. If the thing is 1/4" OD measured, a #6 drill is .204, 1/4-20 tap is, well, .250. Close enough for a grease zerk in my book, but thats just me. Heck, stick it in a nut and see which one works and go from there.
Had some 6mm zerks on a mower I am restoring now. Bought a bag of 20, got a #6, 1/4" tap and the work like the should. Why spend the time and money to get a 6mm tap.
Again, this is all based on the assumption that you have measured the OD of the fitting at 1/4". I apologize for any oversights or poor information given. You know what they say about assumptions, the make an A## out of you and me...in this case only me.
