The zerk is about 1/4 long with about 4 threads, i's just a grease zerk , not to major of an issue, is it 1/4 -18 NPT, 1/4-28 or 1/4 drive? Sorry to ask such a technical question,

Google is your friend. before you can figure out whcich drill to use you need to figure out what you have. seen picture charts for straight and taper threads by looking at google for zeerk fittings.

If it is 1/4" and most likely NPT, it is close enough to course thread 1/4 - 20. Get a #6 drill and a 1/4-20 tap and you should be fine. These are very common sizes and are probably easier to find than NPT (maybe cheaper). Its just a grease zerk...

A screw pitch gauge is your friend. Seriously, they are not that expensive and do come in handy sometimes. Every tool box should have one.

Except for some of them ol' geezers who can look at any thread and tell you what it is.

(quoted from post at 14:05:48 02/20/13) Study up, more to grease zerk's than you think. Even metric sizes now.

Sometimes the advice you get here isn't even worth what you pay for it which is zero. JC also needs to do some studying on thread/pipe sizes. The pitch diameter of a 1/4" NPT male pipe thread is .447 at the first thread (small end) of the taper. Good luck screwing that into a 1/4 tapped hole of any pitch

I apologize for not being clear. I assumed you simply measured the diameter of the zerk and called it 1/4". I do understand the difference between NPT and UNF/UNC thread counts, pitches, and nominal diameters.

You wanted a drill size. If the thing is 1/4" OD measured, a #6 drill is .204, 1/4-20 tap is, well, .250. Close enough for a grease zerk in my book, but thats just me. Heck, stick it in a nut and see which one works and go from there.

Had some 6mm zerks on a mower I am restoring now. Bought a bag of 20, got a #6, 1/4" tap and the work like the should. Why spend the time and money to get a 6mm tap.

Again, this is all based on the assumption that you have measured the OD of the fitting at 1/4". I apologize for any oversights or poor information given. You know what they say about assumptions, the make an A## out of you and me...in this case only me.

Sorry
