why have we lost the technology to build good vregs?

we can still build good gennies.. but not good vregs.

had the 44H out today dragging the pasture.. needle swinging wildly. I rebuilt the genny last year so i know it wasn't jumping brushes. as I recall I went thru 2 vregs geting one that kinda worked.

well it gave up.. somewhat.

I hooked back up a tickle switch I had built using a couple resistors.. one a ford front mount resistor.. with a 3 position center off switch.. one position low charge.. one position high charge.

finished pulling the pasture.. did run out of gas once..

oops.

I have gotten so aggravated with the regulators you buy today I just put Delco alternators on them and be done with it. I get a lot grief from the correct police but there not the ones having to work on them.I do paint them to match the tractor if it is one of mine.A few of my Fords still have the 6 volt systems on them and as long as they work I'll leave them alone If they quit will change them over. Where are you located? I'm in central Florida near Lakeland

Sound, I keep telling people, keep the tor half of the tank full and the bottom half never runs dry!

I concur with your sentiments. This is not rocket science, just due diligence, and we can't seem to get that from products MIC. All we ask is that we get a good, working product for a reasonable price. And if there are specifications that they be met, not close, but exact. I don't want to buy a product rated for +- 10% and get +- 30%. Just do your job and make it work like it should!!! I run a business, that's what I do. I expect nothing less from someone else.

My new Napa Echlin VR950 came in today. $84.17 total. Stamped "Made in USA". I'm going to install it tomorrow with my new coil and see how it does. I went through 3 of the MIC VR's in the last 9 months. Hopefully this will all work to specs.

the H's are real hard to fit a standard delco on.. without cutting the hood up.

I have seen some specialty brackets to mount them high and tight.. and I have seen some conv with cs130 alts.

my genny works fine.. I just had to make the vreg a lil more functional..

It almost makes my blood boil to think about it. I have no more 6 volt tractors on the place because of junky regulators and the money I wasted on them.

The only thing here that has a regulator on it is the grain truck with the 12 volt genny. When that thing gives me fits that is getting an alternator, too. It is the original so it should outlast me. Unless someone does a little "midnight auto" to use on their equipment - that's about the only way to get a good one!

i've got more machines on OE regs than on repalcement.. and the replacements are mostly shoddy.. breakers don't strike square.. bad connections.. etc..

They make a solid state cut-out for 9&2N's......the technology is available to do it for a v/r for 6v or 12v on 8N's as well as other tractors. Seems like someone somewhere could make some money doing that.

few years back, I talked to Mr. Jeffers & for $80, you send him your old regulator & he installs SS internals in you housing & sends it back to you.

below is one he did that was written up on a Corvette web site.

more parts than I would have thought needed.

just need field curent control transistor.. perhaps a comparitor circuit and a solid state device ( big slicon) for the cutout...

still.. real nice looking..

f I recall, his has a Hall effect current sensor & does all 3 functions of old school VRs, cut out, voltage reg, and current regulation.

Still 6volt after his work? JMOR, have you been satified with his work? (I assume so since you mentioned it.)

unfortunately, not a good assumption as I do not have first hand experience with his product. Wish I could say that I did. I have talked with him at length and can say that he is not a wet behind the ears novice! He knows Generator details that many so called experts haven't even imagined yet. I trust him.

Around 1980 Harley came out with a SS voltage reg fot their 12V gen bikes. I made the switch and switched over all I worked on to the SS reg... That was about the time it became law to have the headlights on all the time,,,All the gen's were happy with them the batterys stayed up better than before....

If their is a SS offered that is what I would run no doubt...

Regarding VRs, I have used NAPA house brand for five or so years now after being burned with the black boxed chinese specials. If the NAPA is now around $80 then I can't see much difference between it and the solid state v-reg--if it is a marked upgrade and you essentially have a longer lasting product.

I would give it a shot next time my v-reg goes out, and when I do I will report back after about a month's worth of work.

depends on the specs as to whether you could adapt it over for use. also depends on it's method of control... whether it is doing field control.. for voltage and not current control.

i have seen some basic series pass regs.. that I think would work though not be best suited..
