These tractors still amaze me!

My '44 N has always started & run great (except when the old Champion plugs did their thing). Recently I have had to turn off the gas at the tank - never had to for the last 10 years or so - because the needle & seat would not shut off unless I tapped on the carb. So, yesterday I decided to pull the carb & clean it. It was the dirtiest carb I have ever seen! And no gasket! I don't know how it ever ran with all the crud and air leaks! Anyway, a good cleaning and a new gasket later and it again fired right up & ran just as great as before and now doesn't leak! Never did see anything that would cause the needle to hang up!
How many of the new high tech engines would run like that?

The float pin or the float hinge can wear or the float bracket can get bent and cause the bowl to "hang" by rubbing on the side of the fuel bowl. That"s why tapping the carb caused the float valve to seat.

Guess the value of that depends on what you want from an engine.

At 120 CID and 23 HP the L-head engine in an N-series tractor is producing .192 HP per cubic inch of displacement

At 140 CID and 190 HP the high-tech I4 OHC engine on my Ford Thunderbird Turbo coupe is producing 1.36 HP per cubic inch of displacement

The I4 won't run on dirty gas but gets 8 times more power out of clean gas.....

Will it pull 2BP? Run a bush hog? Chain them rear to rear and see who pulls who that is if you can find a place to hook the bird that wont break.What I like about the N is there is no backseat driver, can you say that about your bird? snickeeeeeeeer!

Actually the new high tech engines will run a lot more miles/hours between overhauls!
