the starter bendix went bad and i am replacing it. does anyone know how the bendix removes from the shaft. the pin won't go through the hole because it is partially covered with the bell does the bell come apart. or slide back someway.any info would be greatly appreciated. lrry thanks

at the factory they used a transmogrifier and put a small pin in with a pair of tweezers and then 'grew' it in place to fit...

not buying that eh?

so.. you've observed that a washer disc wards the pin...... that disc moves down to allow egress...

lrry........yep, the "bell" is semi-springloaded. Me? I use a "nail" that fits the hole in the pin and just tap away. Simple, eh?

Warning: new Bendix requires a NEW nail hole drilled 1/2" closer to the armature ...or... more better the improved "clutch" style Bendix. Many grind a "slant" on the end of the roll-pin so it starts eazier in the armature hole. ........Dell

Dell, when I replaced my crapped out 6v starter a few years ago on my 1947 8n, the new 12v starter came with the new-type bendix, but it kicks out almost as easily as the old type it replaced. Tractor generally starts great but have been wondering if the new hole you mentioned would put more tension on the spring & keep it from kicking out so easily? If so, that will be my first job this Spring when we get back to the cottage & my tractor.

There was a man in the neighbor hood that ran a shop rebuilding starters and generators. When someone would call the starter drive a bendix he would go balastic. Of course we know the word bendix is generac, but he had to straighten people out on it. Its like a lot of people call every rotary cutter a bush-hog, another over used word.

I've had success by putting it a vice and squeezing until it is not covered, then knock the pin out with a punch.

Piker........no, the hole is NOT yer problem, yer clutch style Bendix is semi-BAD. I'd "inspect" the wear pattern on the teeth. Iff'n they were just engaging, then most likely the clutch style Bendix was installed in the "wrong" hole. .......Dell
