newely rebuilt generator, new cut out, and a new amp meter. Single wire generator amp meter shows discharge when starting and more when lights are on. polarized at installation of generator. Why wont it charge or a least show charging

xring 223,To check things ,remove the belt from the generator pulley and jump across the two connection posts on the cutout with a short piece of wire ect.Does that make the generator motor? If not there is something wrong with the generator or wire connections.Post back.

OK i checked voltage 8.40 I'm running 8V battery took belt off generator jumped relay and it ran in the direction of engine rotation

SCRATCH MY POST 8 volt bat. and 8.4 volt reading not good. I didn't read your post well enough sorry.

for gennies with a vreg.. you have to tweak the vreg to get them to charge 8v.

in general.. 8v is a poor bandaid.

I'd make 6 work or go 12.

if it likes 8.. it will love 12...

amp meter has + and - post neg ground system so battery side went to - post is this correct? like I said before when starting the meter shows discharge and turn lights on shows discharge also I took battery of and engine kuit and ideas

What's the voltage at each terminal of your cutout relay when running?
I'm thinking your generator is charging fine and your cutout is not closing.
Wouldn't be the first bad new one I've heard about.
Ammeter discharges when lights are on sounds right to me.
It should bounce as the points open and close when cranking.

If the generator is giving 8.4volts to the 8 volt battery, that seems good enough regardless of the ammeter reading. If you run engine at half-throttle speed with lights on does the ammeter show + chrge and volts remain 8.4 across battery?
