Does anyone know if the specifications changed at all between the frontmount and sidemount blocks? I'm speaking about performance and capacity specs. I've read several different HP ratings that may or may not be describing the engine or drawbar rating. If someone knows more details(torque etc) besides what I've listed below or can correct this info - please do.

I'll dig out my manuals tonight and see what I find there....

30 H.P., "Flat-Head" 4 cylinder engine

4-speed transmission

2400 lbs Dry

540 RPM PTO System

Ferguson System 3 Point Hitch

Position Control and Automatic draft control

Produced from 1947-1952 at Dearborn, Michigan

Raising the compression is probably the cheapest way to increase horsepower on any motor . Problem with the flatheads is the large combustion chamber , so getting 7.0:1 would be about the best you could get with a normal carb , then you would only get another pony or two .

Raising the rpm to 3k would get you about 10 more ponies .

Higher octane would not come into play until your compression ratio exceeded about 9 to 1 .

Wouldn't the higher compression raise the HP/Torque some?

Yes, and from memory I think those HP ratings were 23hp early and 26hp late.

Someone will correct me if that's not right. My memory is far from perfect. :)

Which is why the sidemounts require premium gas.
