Tillers on a 8n

(quoted from post at 00:45:54 02/06/13) have any of you guys used a tiller on your N's?? If so how big of tiller and how did it work?? Thanks!!

Without something to slow down the N without slowing down the PTO speed a tiller on an N will not work very good unless MAYBE you have real soft sandy soil.

Funny you asked, Dell had just told me even a Sherman low runs to fast for a tiller. I had said I wished I had a Sherman low for tilling. However I have a tiller and 1st gear is a bit to fast but it will work. Once ya get the soil broke up with the tiller or plow you can till at a idle with a N.

Only way a tiller will work on a 8N is if you have a pair of draft horses to pull it along as the PTO spins the tiller. Or you find a Howard rotovator transmission and install it. 1st gear on most of the older ford tractors just flat out move the machine way to fast for a tiller. Years ago my dad tried a tiller on our 841 that has a Sherman and it did not do well at all and just jumped all over the place in one gear and in low low range the PTO was slowed down way to much to work either

if the soil is loose, a small 40-48" tiller might work marginally.. but generally.. no... not reccomended....

To emphasize what L.B. and Sounguy are saying...

A fellow vegetable farmer up the road from me runs a tiller off his 8N and he's very happy with the results. His ground is very sandy loam, and it's been cropped every year, which will make a significant difference.

I think it can be done. You just have to accept the limitations of the transmission and non-live PTO and work within those limitations.

is it SPRING already??? Every year, we gitt questions about using roto-tillers behind the 9/2/8N's. They are TOO FAST for roto-tillering. You need the RARE and FRAGILE "Howard" axillary tranny to slow the ground speed down. Sherman aux trannys don't work. ........Dell

I got me a rare Howard. Man is it ever slow. To bad I don't need or use a tiller.

I have a Howard transmission and an old 60" bush hog rotary tiller on a 8N. It performs beautifully. I used to have tiller on a Ford 1900 diesel and the 8N is much quieter and more comfortable to use.
